Hairstyles and Lifestyles

Though you may not think of it as such, your hair is your number one fashion accessory. It plays an important role in the way you look – long or short, straight or curly, dark or light, it’s out there for everyone to see. But given the varied demands of day-to-day life, can it always look fashionable? You bet!

Let’s start with fashion. Fashion is simply a fresh twist on tried-and-true classics. From clothing to accessories to home furnishings, it’s easy to see the progression of fashion through the decades. Spring 2007, for example, revisits the trends of the Sixties, showcasing the soft, sexy French influences of fashion icons like Jackie Kennedy. This spring you’ll see bold graphics on feminine sheath and mini-dresses, funky floral and upholstery-like patterns on girly frocks, and the return of lace and eyelet. Designers spend months developing trends, determining the shapes, textures and colors that will grace the runways season after season.

Just as a fashion consultant would determine what fashion trends look best on you, your hairstylist should advise you about customizing the shape, texture and color of your hair, balancing current trends with your personality and lifestyle.

All women are three-dimensional. Whether you realize it or not, you have a work side, an active side, and a sensual side. Are you a busy stay-at-home mom, nurturing the lives of small children? Maybe you have a professional career and must present yourself accordingly. Or perhaps you work in retail or the service industry and need to look great at a moment’s notice. Whether you’re shy and conservative or bold and straightforward, your personal style should always be reflected in your hairstyle.

Some of us love to wear the latest trends. If that describes you, you should be changing the shape, texture and color of your hair seasonally to complement your trendy clothing selections. If you’re not a trend-watcher and look and feel best in basic, classic pieces, then your hair should follow accordingly. Always remember that you can achieve a fashionable edge with a fresh, seasonal update to your current favorite haircut and color.

Versatility is important when it comes to your hair. From fun and flirty to exciting and exotic, your hairstyle should change and adapt to different situations. Going from day to night should not require a complete makeover. Ask your hairstylist to provide you with the styling lesson you’ll need to make that transition in a matter of minutes. Your hair should complement your appearance in every fashionable situation, whether you’re at the gym, in the office, or dining out with friends. Styling and restyling throughout the day should be a snap.

For many of us, change comes slowly. Don’t feel obligated to dive right in without testing the waters first. Before you change your hair shape, texture, or color, consult with your stylist.

Share your goals and limitations, and allow them to share their professional recommendations. Remember, hairstylists are artists. They are trained to change the way you look and feel by creating a better-looking you.
