One Busy Summer
There’s something for everybody in this summer’s slate of township-sponsored activities, from day camps for kids to senior citizen lunches. Following is a round-up of what the township parks and recreation department has planned.
Community Day
Peters Township’s 28th Annual Community Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 24, from 11 a.m. until the end of the post-sunset fireworks show.
This year’s community day will recognize the 225th anniversary of Peters becoming one of Washington’s first 13 townships.
The day will also feature a Battle of the Teen Bands competition open to young bands from the area. The show will run from 7-10 p.m.
Along with these new attractions, community day will include the usual local and national vendors, food booths, children’s activities, live performances and games, in addition to community business booths, clubs and churches showing off their goods and services.
Trail Walkers Program
Every Tuesday at 10 a.m., the township holds a trail walkers program for residents 55 and older. The program consists of a walk through local trails. Registration is required. For more information, call 724-942-5000.
Wild Things Night
The Washington Wild Things are hosting a Peters Township night at the ballpark on Monday, Aug. 7 at 7:05 p.m. After the game kids will be allowed to run the bases of Falconi Field. Tickets are $5.50 per person. To make a purchase, call 724-250-9555.
Senior Citizen Lunch
The Peters Township Senior Citizen Luncheon Program is held the second Wednesday of each month. This program gives seniors the opportunity to socialize and meet new people in a fun and festive atmosphere. The luncheons take place in the Recreation Center during the months of October thru May and at shelter number one in Peterswood Park from June through September. The picnics are held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The township provides hot dogs and hamburgers during the summer months. Other foods are provided by attendees on a pot luck basis. Entertainment is provided and varies from educational and informational speakers to musicians, magicians, and dancers. The program is free, and residents age 55 and over are encouraged to attend. Sports Camp
Peters Township is sponsoring several sports camps this summer. A baseball camp will be held from June 19-23 from 9 a.m. to noon at Peterswood Park. The camp is open to kids ages 8 to 14. The Soccer Challenger Camp is set for July 10-14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Drill for Skill Basketball Camp is scheduled for July 25-28 at the Community Recreation Center from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and is open to students in grade four through nine.

Theater Camp
The Parks and Recreation department is again hosting its theater camp, this year from June 26-30. The camp, open to actors ages 7-12, will be held from 1-4 p.m. Cost is $32.
Summer Concert Series
From big band to country to blues, Wednesday nights at the Peterswood Park’s outdoor amphitheater will be full of music this summer as the township again hosts its concert series. All shows are free and begin at 7 p.m. This year’s line-up is as follows:
JULY 5: Popular local country band Ruff Creek, which has opened for the likes of Travis Tritt, JoDee Messina and John Michael Montgomery, will bring their mix of original and cover songs to Peterswood Park.
JULY 19: Big Band Memories will bring some cool fun to the middle of summer.
AUGUST 2: Local rock legends The Jaggerz have played everywhere from Club Natural in Beaver County to the American Bandstand, with Dick Clark. In August, they bring their blues-tinged rock to Peterswood.
AUGUST 16: This Peters Township Blues Fest features Shari Richards, Jill West, Tony Janflone, and Gary Belloma with Mystic Knights.

Day Trips
Every other month, the township organizes group day trips to regional attractions. The trips are open to all. Upcoming trips include:
JUNE 19: Put-in-Bay. Nicknamed the Key West of the North, Put-in-Bay is located on South Bass Island, the crown jewel of the Lake Erie Islands of Ohio. There will be plenty of free time for shopping in the area’s plentiful boutiques and gift shops. Cost is $94 and reservations are required by May 16. Reservations requested after June 16 are subject to certain conditions. Departure time for this trip is 6:30 p.m.; arrival time is 10:30 p.m.
AUGUST 17: Historic Churches & Synagogues of Pittsburgh. This tour includes historic Calvary Methodist Church, St. Anthony’s Chapel, Heinz Memorial Chapel, Rodef Shalom Temple, St. Stanislaus Koska and a visit to National Aviary, America’s premier bird park. Lunch at the Grand Concourse is included in the tour. The fee is $59 and reservations are required by July 4. Reservations may be possible after this date but are subject to several conditions. Departure time is 8:15 a.m.
OCTOBER 9: The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad. This tour offers one of America’s most beautiful train rides, passing historic farms and lush mountain greenery through a tranquil and pristine mountain valley. Bring your camera for a great outing. Your tour includes first-class seating and features climate-controlled lounge and dining cars, and a delicious served hot luncheon. The cost of this trip is $89. Reservations are required by September 5.
Reservations might be taken after this date, however, may be subject to certain conditions. Your approximate return time to Peters Township is 8 p.m.
Each of these trips includes fully escorted deluxe motor coach transportation that includes snacks and beverages.
Fishing Derby
The seventh annual McMurray Rotary and Peters Township Fishing Derby is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Peterslake Park. Open to children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade, the even includes prizes for the largest fish, smallest fish, fastest fish and most fish. There will be great prizes and giveaways throughout the day. Cost is $5 for residents and $10 for non-residents.
Amusement Park Tickets
Peters Township offers tickets at discounted prices to Kennywood Park, Sandcastle, Cedar Point, and Idlewild Soak Zone. For more information, call 724-942-5000.
Summer Day Camp
Peters is hosting four weeks of summer day camp at Peterswood Park this summer, featuring games, sports, crafts and special events. The camp is open to children in grades kindergarten through five. Sessions run Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-noon.
Week one - June 19-23
Week two - June 26-30
Week three - July 10-14
Week four - July 17-21
