Former Super Earns Distinguished Educator Award
Dr. Diane L. Kirk, former Peters Township superintendent, received the 2005 Distinguished Educator Award from Tri-State Study Council - part of the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh. Associate Executive, Dr. Chet Kent, from Tri-State, presented Kirk with the award at a recent dinner at the Edgewood Country Club. The Distinguished Educator Award was established in 1981 to acknowledge exceptional leadership practiced by administrators, retired educators, and university faculty who have demonstrated a commitment to the mission of the Study Council.

Peters Selected for HP Technology Grant
Peters Township High School was selected as a 2006 HP Technology for Teaching grant recipient. Peters Township High School will receive an HP award package valued at more than $35,000, which will include five HP Tablet PCs, five HP multimedia projectors, five HP digital cameras, five HP all-in-one printer/scanner/copiers, software and accessories, a cash stipend for each teacher and a professional development program that includes customized learning opportunities, expert mentoring and participation in an online learning community to support teachers’ use of technology.

The grant writing team consisted of Susan Hlebinsky, Project Leader, Andrea Gearhart, Debbie Kendrick, Dana Kirtz, and Erin Wakefield. All are science teachers at Peters Township High School.

“I am very impressed by this team’s efforts and persistence, and I am also very proud of them,” said Toni Sulkowski, Director of Educational and Informational Technology. “ I know that the PTSD Technology Department is looking forward to working with the team to help to implement and integrate these cutting-edge technologies into the curriculum at PTHS.”

Nettles Captures ‘Best of the Best’ Golf Shootout
Chuck Nettles of Peters Township High School captured the title at the 5th annual Best of the Best Golf Classic Student Scholarship competition this past spring at Totteridge Golf Club in Greensburg, PA.

Nettles earned a berth in the championship shootout by firing a 2-over par 74 at last Saturday’s qualifier at Totteridge Golf Club in Greensburg. The event featured 72 of the WPIAL’s best golfers including Nettles’ teammate Zachary Airhart who posted an 87 at the qualifier. Other players earning a spot in today’s shootout where Greensburg Central Catholic’s Nic Milito with an even-par 72, North Allegheny’s Jeff Hinds with a 77, and Greensburg Salem’s Matt Hoover with a 83.

Nettles then repeated Saturday’s performance with another 2-over par 74 to win today’s shootout over Hinds (75), Milito (77), and Hoover (83). For his efforts, Nettles will receive the Nelson Briles Memorial Trophy in honor of the late Pirates pitcher. The Peters Township School District will also receive a $1000 contribution to its general scholarship fund in Nettles name.

The Bulls and the Bears
Approximately 80 students from McMurray Elementary in grades 4 and 5 participated in the Stock Market Game Simulation this spring. When playing the Stock Market Game, students are given an imaginary $100,000 to invest over a ten week period that follows the real stock market. Two fourth grade teams finished in first and second place in the region, competing against the other McMurray teams and teams from surrounding districts. Fifty teams participated in the region. The team of Tyler Schmidt, Nick Parello, Ryan Pollack and Tyler Pollack finished in first place with $109,885.58. The team of Jack Hussey, Riley Crane and Max Augenstein finished second with $108,842.08. The advisors for the Stock Market Game were teachers Alyson Boyer, JoAnne Moran, and Melissa Swortzel.

PT Math League Scores Big Results
Peters Township School District students performed well in the 2006 Pennsylvania Math League regional competition. The school’s two teams placed third and fourth out of 182 schools that participated.

The 6th grade team placed third out of the 202 schools that participated. The team was made up of the following students: Kimie Ellis, Megan Quinlan, Jake Floyd, Robert Ward, and Christopher Buzard. Norman Ponte was the alternate.

The 7th grade team placed fourth. The team was made up of the following students: Caleb Wysocki, Robby Ralston, Christopher Malencia, Tim Palacios, and Kierra Falbo, Michael Counihan was the alternate. Caleb Wysocki tied for second place individually.

PT Middle School Students Win Big at PJAS
Eight students from the Peters Township Middle School participated in this year’s Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science(PJAS) competition held at Penn State University May 14-16. These students designed an experiment, analyzed the results and prepared an oral presentation that was delivered before a panel of judges. Faculty Advisor for this program is Susan Hanley. •
